Buck Steele vacated the Steel Cage title. It was later re-sanctioned as the Death Match championship, and a 64-man tournament was held to determine the first title holder. The top-16 wrestlers were given seeds and the rest of the competitors were randomly placed into the brackets. The semifinals and finals were held at Survivor Series. Four 16-man one-night tournaments were held at four different locations. The Bellatrix Constellation Dome, Gamma Orionis; the Dione Saturndome; the Phobos Sundome, Mars; and the Apollo Heliodome, Asteroid Belt.
One historical note, only Wolf, Chaos, Spike and Vengeance return to the field seeded wrestlers of the 64 from the last tournament similar to this. That one was an all steel cage format, about 230 cards ago.
